BRAFA 2020 - the Coup de Coeur of Professor Rachel Pownall
The international BRAFA Art Fair welcomes you to Tour & Taxis in Brussels from 26 January to 2 February 2020. In this video, Rachel Pownall presents us with her favorite artwork at the fair, a painting from the 1970s by the celebrated Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-Ki (1921–2013) in the booth of Omer Tiroche gallery.
Zao Wou-Ki studied calligraphy and painting before moving to Paris in 1948. His early exhibitions were met with praise from Miró and Picasso. Influenced by the work of artists such as Klee, Matisse and Cézanne, he began to develop a synthesis between Eastern calligraphy and European Art Informel. In 1957, Zao started to paint large-scale works with looser, more gestural brushstrokes. From the 1960s on, his paintings were focused around space and movement, often hovering between nature and abstraction. His expressionist take on Chinese painting transcended east and west with visions of the subconscious.
Rachel Pownall is Professor of Arts and Finance at the TIAS School for Business and Societyy at the Tilburg University and Director of the Executive Master in Cultural Leadership with the Royal Academy of Artsts. Her research interests and publications broadly cover the realm of understanding investor behaviour. She has a particular focus on art markets and assets with an emotional attachment.

BRAFA 2020 - the Coup de Coeur of Bart Suys
The international BRAFA Art Fair welcomes you to Tour & Taxis in Brussels from 26 January to 2 February 2020. Here, Bart Suys presents his coup de coeur at the art fair which is a complete Kunstkammer collection in the booth of Porfirius Kunstkammer.
Back in the Renaissance, Kunstkammers, also called curiosity cabinets, were intended to offer representations of the whole known universe, from both an intellectual and an artistic point of view. Kunstkammers were the predecessors of museums and were organized in accordance with four subdivisions: Preciosia (precious man-made objects), Scientifica (scientific instruments), Naturalia (objects from nature), and Exotica (objects from unknown countries and regions). Bart Sluys adores the eclectic quality of such art installations, which is also a wonderful starting point for an art collection.
Bart Suys is active at the Fundraising and Patronage department of the Royal Museum of Art & History in Brussels. The institution comprises 4 museums: the Art & History Museum, the Musical Instruments Museum, the Halle gate, and the Museums of the Far East.

BRAFA 2020 - the Coup de Coeur of Phillipa Duncan
Phillipa Duncan shares her fascination on 'Embroidery on silk', 2019 from the series Light on Light, by the Spanish artist José María Sicilia (1954). It gives a contemporary take on what many people see as a revival of arts and crafts, which is embroidery. Sicilia is playing with light and colours. The layers force the visitor’s eye to zoom in, look at the detail, and consider the various levels. His artwork is presented by Meessen De Clercq at the international BRAFA Art Fair in Brussels.
Phillippa Duncan is an independent art advisor and collection manager from South Africa who started her company In Association at the end of 2013. She is also trained as a paper conservator. The consultancy is run side-by-side with the paper conservation studio which specialises in vacuum-based techniques.
Olivier Meessen and Jan De Clercq founded a new platform for contemporary art in Brussels in 2008. The gallery presents solo and curated group shows, creating catalogues in close collaboration with the artists involved.

BRAFA 2020 - the Coup de Coeur of Mathieu Deldicque
Mathieu Deldicque, Cultural Heritage Curator at the Musée Condé, Domaine de Chantilly, shares his "Coup de Coeur" at the BRAFA Art Fair 2020 with Röbbig München: a pair of olio tureens by Johann Gregorius Höroldt (1696 - 1775). The Meissen tureens of circa 1724/25 have been painted with chinoiserie scenes; the inner side is decorated with "Böttgerlüster" and a lobster in gold.
The Château de Chantilly is one of the finest jewels in the crown of France's cultural heritage. It is the work of a man with an extraordinary destiny: Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, son of the last King of France, Louis-Philippe. This prince, who is considered to be the greatest collector of his time, made Chantilly the showcase for his countless masterpieces and precious manuscripts. The Château survived down through the centuries and remains as it was when the Duke of Aumale bequeathed it to the Institut de France in 1886, making it the perfect place to take a journey back in time to the heart of a princely residence. In tribute to his illustrious predecessors, the Princes of Condé, the Duke of Aumale called the series of rooms housing his collection the "Condé Museum".
Röbbig München, one of the leading art dealers for early Meissen and German 18th century porcelain, is based in the historic Carolinenpalais, situated in the centre of the Bavarian capital. The gallery also specializes in important French and German furniture, paintings and art objets from the Louis XIV to the Louis XVI and early Empire period. Röbbig exhibits regularly at the world's most important art fairs in Maastricht, New York and Munich and publishes well-researched catalogues.

BRAFA 2020 - the Coup de Coeur of Thierry Boutemy
A small, early 17th century oil on copper still-life of roses on the booth of Floris van Wanroij Fine Art stole the heart of Brussels based floral artist Thierry Boutemy. In this video, he shares his thoughts on it.
This year, BRAFA called on Thierry Boutemy to adorn the alleyways of the fair. The Brussels based French florist's simple yet refined designs are inspired by his childhood walks in the countryside, explaining: ‘My work is about lightness, joy, and Romanticism, as the term was understood in the 19th century. I love projects that create a link with what I feel. My idea took root in the summer and grew: I would recapture the wild vegetation that grew in no man’s land. Nobody could get near the space so nature took over, flowers blooming around the watchtowers...’
