Klaas Muller

Klaas Muller joins BRAFA in the Galleries

Are you a riddle master? Klaas Muller presents The Five Senses, a 16th century Flemish Old Master painting with an exciting iconography...

It is a rare example of a moralising and humorous painting at the same time, commonly depicted in the circles of the "Rederijkers" and the late 16th century intellectual elite. Inventories of this period show that pictures such as these were also hung in the dining rooms of the wealthy bourgeoisie in Mechelen and Antwerp, as a conversation piece: to erudite and delight the informed viewer.

Join Klaas Muller in his gallery in Brussels during BRAFA in the Galleries from 27 - 31 January 2021. rodolphe janssen

Brafa in the Galleries: Sanam Khatibi, Cyanide & Genesis Belanger, The Party’s Over

21 vanitas still lives are exhibited in Cyanide, Sanam Khatibi’s third solo exhibition at rodolphe janssen. In these minutely rendered miniature paintings, typical trappings of the Golden Age vanitas appear and reappear: a vase with cut flowers, insects, a collection of shells, an ornately carved human skull. Like that of the Baroque painter, these are bibelots from Khatibi’s studio, fragments in a lifelong ontological pursuit of collection...

Rodolphe Janssen (Brussels – Knokke) founded his gallery in 1991, and has since organized over 250 exhibitions of contemporary art. During the twenty-nine years since the gallery opened, rodolphe janssen has built up strong relationships with collectors, contemporary art museums and art centers in Europe, the USA and Asia.

Huberty & Breyne

BRAFA in the Galleries: Huberty & Breyne shows an exceptional drawing by Hergé

The Huberty & Breyne gallery is a contemporary art gallery specialising in the art of the comic strip. At this year’s BRAFA in the Galleries, alongside work by our regular artists –the likes of Philippe Geluck with his famous cat and Midam, the creator of Kid Paddle and Game Over –the gallery will be showing some of the great classics of the comics world. One of these iconic pieces is a drawing by Hergé –and, somewhat exceptionally, a drawing not of Tintin but of Quick and Flupke! This particular illustration, in Indian ink and dating from 1950, was used for the title page of the third volume in the series recording the exploits of the famous duo. Exhibition venue: Place du Châtelain 33, Brussels.

At a time when solidarity is especially important, the gallery is delighted, moreover, to be opening its doors to one of its Dutch confreres, Lennart Booij. The Lennart Booij gallery in Amsterdam specialises in René Lalique jewellery and glassware, and, additionally, in Picasso ceramics, the latter being a point of particular interest given the current exhibition dedicated to “Picasso and the Comic Strip” at the Musée Picasso in Paris.

BRAFA in the Galleries is the newly created alternative to the BRAFA Art Fair at Tour & Taxis, Brussels, which has been postponed to January 2022. Bernier/Eliades Gallery

BERNIER/ELIADES joins BRAFA in the Galleries with contemporary art

During BRAFA 2021, the BERNIER/ELIADES Gallery will present the first solo show by the young German painter Philip A. Zimmermann in their gallery space in Brussels. In this video, you can enjoy 'Garden of Light', an installation by the Scottish artist Charles Sandison (1969), presented by the gallery in Athens this year. The artist lives and works in Finland for almost 25 years.

'Garden of light' comprises interwoven video projections and large screens that invite the audience to immerse themselves in the digital glow of an alternate universe populated artificial intelligence life forms. Words, numbers, signs, and symbols roam freely around the walls. Sometimes briefly merging to form human figures and then exploding into a storm of letters, they transform themselves from one lexicon to another. Sandison combines his ability to write complex computer programs with a savant like spatial dexterity that visualises the hidden world of data that surrounds us.

Founded in Athens in 1977, the BERNIER/ELIADES Gallery has always been at the forefront of contemporary art in Greece. Jean Bernier and Marina Eliades have introduced a number of artistic movements such as Arte Povera, Minimalism, Land Art and Conceptual Art to the Greek public, also focusing on young American and European artists. In addition to their gallery in Athens, they opened a new space in Brussels in 2016.

Gokelaere & Robinson

Gokelaere & Robinson excel in timeless 20th century design

Stanislas Gokelaere and Céline Robinson can't imagine a life without aestethics. Their galleries in Knokke-Zoute and Brussels feature unique works that combine refined craftsmanship and timeless style, primarily by Scandinavian, American, French, Brazilian and Italian designers working between the 1940s and 1980s.

Visitors to BRAFA in the Galleries can enjoy this desk designed by Joaquim Tenreiro (1906–1992) for Oscar Niemeyer's Machete television network offices. BRAFA in the Galleries: C L E A R I N G opens doors to Calvin Marcus exhibition

C L E A R I N G is pleased to announce 'EVERYTHING GOING THROUGH ITSELF', an exhibition of new works by the American contemporary artist Calvin Marcus (1988), which takes place in Brussels during BRAFA in the Galleries (27 - 30 January 2021). Through a dozen large paintings, Marcus expands his series of fragmented self-contained narratives, offering many discreet happenings. Dreamlike images, large fields of color, haunting twists, and missing parts are the autonomous realities that make up the compositions. These disjointed moments are meant to burn brightly and expire as one moves between paintings.

Calvin Marcus’s work is part of the collections of MoMA and the Whitney Museum, New York; MCA, Chicago; MOCA, Los Angeles; Museum Boijmans, Rotterdam; Paris Museum of Modern Art and Fondation Louis Vuitton, Paris; Astrup Fearnley, Oslo; Rubell Museum, Miami; Aishti Foundation, Beirut; and K11, Hong Kong/Shanghai/Beijing.

C L E A R I N G is a contemporary art gallery based in New York and Brussels. The gallery was founded in 2011, with the focus of showing emerging art. It now represents 17 living artists, providing many of them - such as Harold Ancart, Korakrit Arunanondchai, Calvin Marcus and Marina Pinsky - with their first gallery exhibition. The gallery also represents the estates of Eduardo Paolozzi, Bruno Gironcoli and René Heyvaert.

Galerie Oscar De Vos

BRAFA in the Galleries: Oscar de Vos shows a rediscovered masterpiece by Constant Permeke

Constant Permeke considered his 'Woman cutting the bread' (De broodsnijdster, 1927) as one of his most loved paintings and refused to part with it. Three years after Permeke passed away, in 1952, his children renounced one of his most famous masterpieces. An Antwerp diamond merchant became the new owner, who shortly after emigrated to the United States. Museum directors and official instances lost track of 'Woman cutting the bread'.

In 1987 the painting came into the hands of a Belgian collector. After being privately owned for over 30 years – and prior to that being in the US for over 30 years – today, Permeke's exceptional canvas is available on the art market again, in the BRAFA in the Galleries exhibition at Oscar De Vos in Sint-Martens-Latem. The art connoisseur has a deep-rooted passion for modern Flemish art dating from 1880 to 1940. His gallery opened in 1968, focusing on Latem School paintings, drawings and sculptures.

BRAFA 2020 highlight: extraordinary James Ensor works presented by Samuel Vanhoegaerden Gallery

At the 65th BRAFA Art Fair in 2020, Samuel Vanhoegaerden Gallery showcases an extraordinary collection of works by James Ensor for the first time. Thirteen paintings (canvases/panels) are shown along some twenty drawings, which are extensively described and studied in a new book/catalogue with more than 100 illustrations, to provide improved insight into the world of James Ensor.

This unique exhibition is the fruit of 10 years of collecting and safeguarding drawings and paintings. It aims to bring the artist closer to the general public and, in addition to the paintings and drawings, includes photographs and documents made available by the Ensor archive. The compilation of this show already started in 2010 and finally will be on stage in 2020 (just over 70 years after the artist's death in 1949) during the BRAFA 2020 art fair.

James Ensor (1860-1949) is one of Belgium's most important artists, appearing in all writing on modern art. He was groundbreaking in his manner of painting, paved the way for Belgian Expressionism, Dadaism and Surrealism, while adhering to Symbolism.
Already during his lifetime, and to this day, exhibitions of his works continue to be held in the most important museums of the world (including the MOMA, the Getty Museum and the Musée d'Orsay) and research of his oeuvre continues to expand.

The BRAFA Art Fair, created in 1956, is one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious art fairs, famous for the high quality fine art, antiques, modern and contemporary art and design it offers. The first major art event of the year, it is considered a reliable barometer of the art market.

The 65th international BRAFA Art Fair takes place from 26 January through 2 February 2020 at Tour & Taxis Brussels. www.brafa.art

Italian glass expert Marc Heiremans to offer museum piece by Carlo Scarpa at BRAFA 2020

An extremely rare 'Laccato' bowl will star at the international BRAFA, the Brussels Art Fair, with the gallery of Marc Heiremans (Antwerp). The object was designed by the famous Italian architect Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) for the XXII Venice Biennale in 1940. The important modernity of this museum piece lies in the simple shape designed by Scarpa, and the strong color combination of red and black. The bowl has been executed by the Venini Glassworks of Murano, using the very complex 'incalmo' technique, with the upper red part made of crushed lamp-worked beads. Only very few were made due to the war period. That also explains why this is a rare object on the art market.

Since 1980, Marc Heiremans has earned a solid reputation as an international expert in 20th century Murano glass, with extensive historical and technical knowledge of this art discipline. At BRAFA 2020, the gallery will feature high-quality 20th century ceramics and glass, alongside contemporary furniture by the Dutch cabinet maker Onno Schelling and the German designer Eugene Russo, illuminated by Italian lighting.

The international BRAFA Art Fair will celebrate its 65th edition at Tour & Taxis in Brussels from 26 January - 2 February 2020. www.brafa.art

BRAFA 2019 showstopper: Frida Kahlo corset presented by Gallery Sophie van de Velde

The international BRAFA Art Fair 2019 is thrilled to welcome new exhibitor Gallery Sophie van de Velde (26 January - 3 February). The gallery makes quite an entrance at Tour & Taxis Brussels, presenting an outright eye-catcher at their booth 18d: Frida Kahlo's 'Life and Pain in Plaster Corset with a Hammer and Sickle'.

Frida’s Plaster Corset with a Hammer and Sickle tells a fascinating, multi-faceted story, a story of a painful life lived undefeated, a life lost and a chapter of history. Painted by Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), it is a tridimensional piece that alludes to the broken state of her body, while offering social commentary on events both historical and personal. The painting includes metaphors for the baby she lost, as well as the Communist Party and the Revolution, Frida’s “only real reason to live.”
Frida Kahlo is a remarkable woman who is remembered for her personal struggle and extraordinary life as much as for her vibrant and intimate artwork. Plagued by illness since youth, she suffered a near-fatal bus accident at age 18 that damaged her spinal column and fractured her pelvis, confining her to bed for months and leaving her with lifelong complications.
Frida’s Plaster Corset with a Hammer and Sickle was used by Frida during her confinement at the Hospital Ingles in 1950 after surgery. The color has faded from regular wear and tear, but Frida's bodily imprint is clearly visible on the inside, showing her belly button and breasts, along with dirt caused by sweat and months of wear. Painting the corset after the plaster was applied to her body, she used a mirror to see her drawing whilst prostrated in bed.
