Claes Contemporary & Modern Gallery: Congolese painters from the early 1970s to the present day
For the first time, the Claes Contemporary & Modern Gallery opens its doors to an exhibition bringing together Congolese painters from the early 1970s to the present day. At the dawn of Independence, as art academies flourished across the country, young artists sought to build artistic careers outside conventional codes and pictorial traditions. In 1978, the group exhibition « Art Partout » at the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts, bringing together both « academicians » and « self-taught » artists, introduced to the public many artists who proclaimed themselves as « popular artists ». Narrators of urban life and guardians of collective memory, their paintings reimagined the style of their predecessors from the Hangar workshop, embracing figurative art inspired by daily life, political events, and social realities—imagery in which the entire population could recognize itself...

ABOUT
Didier Claes is een expert in Afrikaanse kunst, met een bijzondere specialisatie in werken uit Centraal-Afrika. De in 2002 opgerichte galerie in Brussel heeft zich snel gevestigd als een bevoorrechte plaats voor de presentatie van objecten van uitzonderlijke kwaliteit uit belangrijke westerse collecties. Sinds het begin van de jaren 2000 heeft Didier Claes naam gemaakt op de internationale scène door deel te nemen aan talrijke kunstbeurzen, waar hij zorgvuldig gekozen selecties tentoonstelt. Hij heeft ook een aantal baanbrekende projecten gerealiseerd, waaronder de tentoonstellingen Mestach l'Africain in 2007 en Congo mythical masks in 2009 in Brussel, evenals Arts d'Afrique. Voir l'invisible in het Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux in 2011 en Uzuri wa Dunia in de Ancienne Nonciature in Brussel. Didier Claes zet zich in voor de promotie van Afrikaanse kunst en heeft bijgedragen aan de publicatie van naslagwerken zoals Empreintes d'Afrique: l'art tribal au fil des fleuves (2011, Éditions 5 continents) en Passion Partagée (2023, Éditions Fonds).
