Patrick Derom Gallery is back at BRAFA with a special focus on Léon Spilliaert

The Brussels based Patrick Derom Gallery is now helmed in 2025 by Patrick Derom, his son Edouard and newly arrived Christine de Schaetzen. Spanning works from 1880 to the present day, the gallery presents an extraordinary array of modern movements from Symbolism to Pop Art, with occasional ventures into contemporary art. Artists presented this edition are Léon Spilliaert, Jean Delville, William Degouve de Nuncques, René Magritte, Ossip Zadkine, Alberto Magnelli, Lucio Fontana, André Lanskoy, Pol Bury, Bram Bogart, Evelyne Axell, Fabienne Verdier and Dirk Braeckman. Among their highlights for BRAFA’s 70th edition is a true masterpiece by Léon Spilliaert (Ostend, 1881-1946 Brussels).  “La Verrière” (The Glass Roof), dated 1909, offers a splendid glimpse into the artist’s world, portraying an annex of his home through a mesmerising interplay of perspectives and reflections. The mirror plays a key role here, as in other Spilliaert’s interiors. The mirror reflects other parts of the rooms and specific objects, but also enhances the opening of the glass roof to the rear façade of the house.

ABOUT

The gallery, founded in 1986 by Patrick Derom, encompasses a wide historical period from approximately 1880 to the present day, featuring works from key modern movements such as Symbolism and Pop Art, with occasional forays into contemporary art. As a passionate collector, Patrick Derom bases his acquisitions on two essential criteria: exceptional quality and his personal enthusiasm for the artist or artwork. In 2023, Patrick's son, Edouard Derom joined the gallery, co-curating a Léon Spilliaert exhibition. Edouard holds a Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU), where his research focused on the ZERO group. He has also held various roles at major museums in the United States, France and China. In January 2025, Christine de Schaetzen joined the gallery’s team. Before arriving at Patrick Derom Gallery, Christine was Head of Business Development at the global auction house Bonhams in Belgium and Luxemburg, and Modern & Contemporary Art specialist since 2016. She accompanied important clients for advice, valuation and expertise, and consigned major collections of Modern & Contemporary Art, Asian Art, African Art and Jewellery which have been sold in New York, Los Angeles, London, Copenhagen, Paris and Hong Kong.
